Nullarbor Links 848-mile golf course is longest in history.

July 16th, 2009

Watch out Pebble Beach! Heads up Augusta National! There is a new monster golf course on the horizon. Well maybe not in terms of quiality, but this new Australian course is making waves.

At 848 miles this new phenom of fairways has dominated the competition… in terms of length. This ridiculously long track runs along a desert highway in the Australian Outback. It is a par-71 that goes by the name of Nullarbor Links and has holes in 18 different towns between the states of South Australia and Western Australia. The course spans two time zones and is longer than the entire length of the UK. Golfers will play one hole then drive as much as 100 kilometers to get to the next hole.

Nullarbor Links is scheduled to be completed next month (August 2009). It was conceived five years ago “over a couple of beers”… You dont say!!! I dont think anyone can come up with an idea this crazy without being drunk. It looks like this may be more of a ploy to help boost tourism to a desolate desert highway in the Outback than a legitimate new track.

Summer heat brings pricing that cant be beat!

July 13th, 2009

The summer in Palm Springs, or any desert for that matter, can bring scorching weather. With daily temperatures soaring into the triple digits it is highly unlikely anyone would think to travel to the Coachella Valley. Although the idea of roasting in the sun keeps many Southern California residents at bay there is one reason to rethink your next weekends plans… the amazingly low rates!

Those marketing directors are not newbies to the idea of supply and demand. They know the rate of visitors plummets during the summer so something has to be done to stay afloat. The gray and white  palette of blistering cold through the North & East has ceased. The frozen tundras of the Midwest, Canada and the East Coast have thawed giving new life to green fairways. The snowbirds are teeing off at their local country clubs while the Southern California residents flock to the beaches. The holiday traffic is gone and the PGA Tour has migrated to other parts of the country. So how do luxurious resorts and high end golf courses stay in business? By offering you, the consumer, deals like no other.

Now that the price issue is out of the way here are some of the best ways to enjoy yourself…

1) TEE OFF EARLY. Although the area is not teaming with crazed golfers like the winter months there is still a local presence left fighting for morning tee times. There is good news though – those marketing managers are on your side again. They know the locals will be there all summer, but you are only there for the weekend. The residents typically get a slightly lower rate than visitors, but that special rate can only get them tee times a few days in advance. So go ahead and call a few weeks prior and snag the 6 O’ clocker.

2) HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. This is the most overlooked yet easiest to initiate. No matter what your doing the odds are you are going to lose more fluids during the summer – especially in the desert. Do yourself a favor and grab an extra bottle of water or two.

3) QUALITY NOT QUANTITY. Because the rates are ridiculously low it would be ludicrous not to upgrade your weekend getaway. It is easy to find 4-star resorts for under $100 a night – some even offer meal vouchers. Also, high end courses that run upwards of $175+ during peak season can be played for around $50. If you want to keep the spending at a minimum thats fine, but a little extra coin will get you a lot more during the summer months. Plus, the next time your at your in-laws you can impress them by rattling off memories of that luxury resort they saw on the Travel Channel or brag to your buddies about how you played the course on the PGA Tour they’re currently watching on tv.

I hope this gives new life to an easy, convenient and inexpensive weekend getaway or vacation. Cheers!
